💰 How far does your money go?
Barcelona is more expensive than Lisbon or Porto, but less so than you might expect. A draught beer at a neighbourhood bar costs around €2.50. About €1 more than an imperial back home. A menu del día in a local restaurant runs €13–15 for three courses and a drink. Tapas in El Born start at €3–4 each. Eat and drink well all day for €35–40 if you stay off the Ramblas.
☀️ The weather
Barcelona in July and August is hot. Temperatures reach 31°C during the day and hold around 22°C at night. The Mediterranean sits at 25°C by August, warmer than the Atlantic and far calmer. If you are used to Portuguese summers, you will feel at home. What catches people out is the humidity: Barcelona clings to the heat in a way that Lisbon and Porto do not. Evenings stay light until 10pm.

🎯 What to do
Barcelona is Gaudí, beaches, tapas, and nights that go until dawn. Here is where to start.
Sagrada Família. 2026 is the year the Tower of Jesus Christ is finally complete after 144 years of construction. Book tickets weeks in advance, especially in summer.
Park Güell. Mosaic terraces, sea views, and Gaudí at his most playful. Go before 9am to beat the heat and the crowds.
El Born. The neighbourhood that resisted gentrification longest. Marble bar tops, wooden barrels, €2 olives, and vermouth on tap before lunch.
Barceloneta beach. Ten minutes from the Gothic Quarter. Warm water, long sand, and cheap drinks from the chiringuitos along the front.
🗺️ Where to go from here
Barcelona is a gateway. All of these are reachable by train or bus.
Sitges. 35 minutes by train. A small beach town with clear water and whitewashed streets that fills up in summer for good reason.
Montserrat. Just over an hour by train and cable car. A mountain monastery carved into pink rock with views across Catalonia.
Tarragona. 1 hour by train. A Roman amphitheatre right on the sea, with a fraction of the crowds of Barcelona.
Costa Brava. 1.5–2 hours north by car or bus. Rocky coves and clear blue water that looks more Greek than Spanish.
