Grey Paris skies traded for volcanic cliffs and Atlantic light.
By October, Paris is grey by 5pm and the terraces have gone quiet. Madeira runs on subtropical air, black sand beaches and levada trails cut into the mountains, and Ryanair and EasyJet fly there non-stop from €69 return. No layovers, no faff, just a short hop south.

💰 How Far Does Your Money Go?
A full lunch menu in Funchal, main, drink and coffee, costs under €10. A Coral beer at a local café runs about €2.5, and a shot of poncha, Madeira's rum-based local drink, is cheaper still. A bus ride across town is €2. That €69 flight buys you a week of eating out for less than a few rounds on a Paris terrace.
☀️ The Weather
Madeira barely notices the seasons. In late September and October, expect highs around 23°C with warm, dry days. Through November the average drifts down to 18–21°C, still mild enough for shorts and a swim in the Lido pools. By early December it settles around 19–20°C in the day, cooling to the mid-teens at night, with skies staying largely clear thanks to the island's Atlantic microclimate.
🏨 Where to Stay
Funchal's hotel scene runs from simple guesthouses to five-star cliffside icons.
CASA15 Guesthouse Funchal — 8.6/10 · From €55/night A renovated apartment with a garden, close to the centre. Built for travellers who just need a comfortable base.
Meliá Madeira Mare — 8.9/10 · From €150/night A polished five-star on the Lido seafront with sea-view pools. The reliable mid-range treat.
Reid's Palace, A Belmond Hotel — 9.3/10 · From €420/night A century-old clifftop icon with tidal pools and gardens over the Atlantic. For a proper splurge.
🎯 What to Do
Funchal moves at its own pace, somewhere between volcanic peaks and the ocean.
Levada do Rei walk — a river-carved irrigation trail through laurel forest, one of the island's calmest hikes.
Monte Palace Tropical Garden, reached by cable car over Funchal's rooftops.
Mercado dos Lavradores and a poncha crawl through Funchal's old town, the best way to eat and drink like a local.
Cabo Girão skywalk, a glass platform suspended 580 metres above the ocean, found nowhere else on the island.
🗺️ Where to Go From Here
Funchal is also a starting point for the rest of the Madeira archipelago.
Porto Santo — a nine-kilometre golden sand beach, reached by a short flight or a two-hour ferry from Funchal.
Ponta de São Lourenço — the island's dramatic volcanic eastern tip, an easy drive or bus ride away.
Curral das Freiras — a mountain village tucked inside an extinct volcanic crater, 30 minutes from Funchal.
€69 doesn't buy much of a weekend in Paris. It buys a full week on a Portuguese island. Dates move fast on routes this cheap.
