💰 How far does your money go?
Australia is not a cheap destination, but it goes further than you might expect. A pint in a Melbourne bar costs around £4.50 — about £2 less than the average London pub. A flat white runs £3. A café lunch is £12–15. Your biggest spend will be activities and the occasional long-distance journey, not day-to-day eating.
☀️ The weather
November in London is eight degrees, rain, and darkness by 4pm. In Australia, summer is beginning. Sydney hits 24°C, Brisbane reaches 26°C, and Melbourne swings between 18°C and 27°C on any given day. "Four seasons in one day" is not a cliché here. Brisbane is the warmest and driest. All three are an entirely different planet compared to what you are leaving behind.

🎯 What to do
The east coast rewards the curious. Here is where to start.
Melbourne's laneways. Hosier Lane, AC/DC Lane, Croft Alley — street art, coffee, and bars packed into narrow Victorian alleys. The best part of Melbourne is free.
Sydney Harbour. The Opera House, the Harbour Bridge climb, and the ferry to Manly Beach. Sydney's greatest hits are all on the water.
Australia Zoo, Brisbane. Steve Irwin's family still runs it. Forty-five minutes north of Brisbane, with over 1,200 animals and keeper presentations throughout the day.
Great Barrier Reef day trip. Fly from Brisbane to Cairns in an hour, then take a boat out to the reef. Snorkelling, diving, glass-bottom boat — the largest coral system on earth.
🗺️ Where to go from here
The east coast is a road. These are the stops worth making.
Gold Coast. An hour south of Brisbane by bus or train. Long beaches, surf schools, and significantly cheaper than Sydney for food and drinks.
Blue Mountains. Two hours west of Sydney by train. Eucalyptus forest, sandstone cliffs, and the Three Sisters at Katoomba. A full day without needing a car.
The Whitsundays. Fly from Brisbane or Sydney and reach Airlie Beach. Whitehaven Beach is one of the finest stretches of sand in the world — reach it by boat.
Byron Bay. Two hours south of Brisbane by bus. Surfers, easy pace, and the most relaxed stretch of the New South Wales coast.
Uluru. A short flight from any east coast city. Red rock, deep silence, and a sky that most people never see. Worth building the trip around.
