💰 How far does your money go?
Hong Kong has a reputation for expense, but that depends entirely on where you eat. A full bowl of wonton noodles from a local shop costs around £4. Dim sum for two, done properly, comes in under £20. A cold local beer is about £5.50. The city gets expensive when you start choosing hotel bars and rooftops, but at street level it is remarkably affordable.
☀️ The weather
September is hot and intense: 31°C during the day, with nights staying above 26°C. Humidity is high and typhoon season is still active, so some disruption is possible. January is the sharper choice. Temperatures sit at 18–20°C during the day, it is mostly dry and sunny, and cool evenings around 13°C make it genuinely pleasant. The northeast monsoon keeps humidity low. It is one of the best months to be in the city.

🎯 What to do
Hong Kong is compact, dense, and relentlessly interesting.
Victoria Peak - Take the Peak Tram up for the city's most iconic panoramic view. Better at night when the skyline lights up.
Temple Street Night Market - Kowloon's best street market. Go after 7pm when the food stalls get going.
Tian Tan Buddha, Lantau Island - One of the world's largest outdoor Buddha statues, reached by cable car across mountains and sea. A half-day well spent.
Dragon's Back Trail - A coastal hike with views of the South China Sea. One of the only places in Hong Kong where the city completely disappears.
🗺️ Where to go from here
Hong Kong is one of Asia's great hubs. Use it as a base.
Macau - 1 hour by ferry. Baroque Portuguese churches, Las Vegas-scale casinos, and the best egg tarts outside Lisbon.
Shenzhen - 30 minutes by high-speed train. China's most modern city, with a thriving arts scene and prices a fraction of Hong Kong's.
Guangzhou - 1 hour by high-speed rail. One of China's great food cities, with some of the best Cantonese cooking in the world.
Taipei - Around 90 minutes by flight. Night markets, mountains, hot springs, and one of Asia's most underrated food scenes.
Hong Kong for under £400 return from London does not come around often. The January dates in particular are exceptional value.
