Macau is one of the strangest places on earth, in the best way. Portuguese cobblestones lead to Cantonese temples, then somehow into the world's biggest casino. For November, China Eastern has return flights from Gatwick for as little as £332.

💰 How far does your money go?

Outside the casino floor, Macau is genuinely affordable. A full meal at a local dai pai dong costs around £4. A local beer at a neighbourhood bar is £2.50. The city bus is £0.60 flat. The famous Macanese egg tarts, warm and custard-filled, are around £1 from the bakeries in Taipa Village. Less than a round on the Tube.

☀️ The weather in November

November is one of the best times to visit Macau. Temperatures sit between 21°C and 24°C during the day, dropping to around 17°C at night. Expect six hours of sunshine daily and very little rain. The humidity drops off sharply compared to summer, making it easy and comfortable to walk around all day.

🏨 Where to stay

Macau has options from no-frills guesthouses to some of the most extraordinary hotels on the planet.

Hotel Sintra — 8.2/10 · From £55/night A reliable, centrally located pick near the Lisboa area. Clean, straightforward, and well-priced for Macau.

Sofitel Macau at Ponte 16 — 8.6/10 · From £115/night On the waterfront in the old city, with a rooftop pool and a great position for exploring the historic centre on foot.

Morpheus — 9.1/10 · From £310/night A Zaha Hadid design with three sky bridges and a spa that takes half a day to explore. One of the most striking buildings in the world, let alone hotels.

🎯 What to do

Macau is small but completely packed. You need at least three days to scratch the surface.

Ruins of St Paul's – A 16th-century Jesuit cathedral facade built partly by Japanese craftsmen. One of the most photographed landmarks in Asia, and free.

Taipa Village – Portuguese-tiled streets lined with bakeries, dried seafood stalls, and pork chop buns. The most human corner of Macau.

Macau Tower bungee jump – The highest commercial bungee jump in the world at 233 metres. The viewing deck alone is worth going up.

The House of Dancing Water – A 90-minute live show at City of Dreams: cliff divers, acrobats, motorcycles, and a cast of 80 in a 270-degree aqua theatre. Nothing else like it.

🗺️ Where to go from here

Macau makes a natural base for a wider Pearl River Delta trip. Once you are this far east, it would be a waste to stop here.

Hong Kong – A 60-minute ferry on TurboJet or Cotai Water Jet, around £15 each way. Denser, faster, and one of the best food cities in the world.

Zhuhai – Cross the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge by bus in under an hour. Quieter, greener, and a proper Chinese city without the tourist layer.

Guangzhou – About two hours north by high-speed train from Zhuhai. The capital of Cantonese cuisine and a city most Western tourists never reach.

Shenzhen – Head to Hong Kong first, then cross the border by MTR. China's tech capital, with markets, street food, and a pace that makes London feel slow.
