São Paulo is the largest city in the Western Hemisphere. Twenty-two million people, a restaurant scene that rivals anywhere in Europe, and a night that starts late and ends very late. Iberia flies from Brussels via Madrid from €579 return, and that is genuinely cheap for Brazil.

💰 How far does your money go?
A draft beer (chopp) at a neighbourhood boteco costs around R$14 — roughly €2.40. The famous mortadella sandwich at Mercado Municipal, thick-cut and served fresh, comes to about R$48 (€8.50) and easily counts as lunch. The city's por quilo restaurants let you fill a plate for a fixed price per gram — a proper meal for under €5 is routine. For food and drink, São Paulo runs far cheaper than most European capitals.
☀️ The weather
February and March are São Paulo's late summer, with temperatures holding at 25–30°C. The city sees afternoon showers regularly during this period — brief and heavy, followed by sunshine. Evenings are warm and humid, perfect for sitting outside. If you are heading further to Rio or Iguaçu Falls, both run similarly warm through this window.
🏨 Where to stay
Three solid options across every budget.
ibis São Paulo Paulista — 8.2/10 · From €45/night Close to Avenida Paulista and the metro, a reliable base with a consistent track record for location and value.
Grand Hyatt São Paulo — 8.6/10 · From €130/night A full-service hotel in the Vila Olímpia district, with a pool, rooftop bar and easy access to the city's main dining and entertainment areas.
Hotel Unique — 9.0/10 · From €250/night One of São Paulo's most recognisable buildings — an arc-shaped tower in Jardim Paulista. The rooftop pool and bar are worth the price of admission alone.
🎯 What to do
A city that rewards staying longer than you planned.
Ibirapuera Park — São Paulo's lungs. Jogging paths, cycle routes, three major art museums and a lake, all packed into the city centre. Start here.
MASP — The Museu de Arte de São Paulo sits elevated above Avenida Paulista, with one of the most significant art collections in Latin America. Free on Tuesdays.
Mercado Municipal — Built in 1933 and still at full volume. Come for the mortadella sandwich (it's enormous) and stay for the stalls selling tropical fruit, spices and dried goods you won't find anywhere else.
Beco do Batman — A narrow alleyway in Vila Madalena covered floor to ceiling in street art by Brazilian artists. One of the best urban art spots in South America, and entirely free.
🗺️ Where to go from here
São Paulo is the main gateway into Brazil. The country opens up quickly from here.
Rio de Janeiro — 1 hour by plane. Copacabana, Ipanema, Corcovado and the chaos of Carnaval (if your dates overlap). A city unlike any other.
Iguaçu Falls — 2 hours by plane. One of the great natural spectacles on the planet, straddling the border between Brazil and Argentina. See both sides.
Florianópolis — 1 hour by plane. An island city off the southern coast, with 40 beaches, clear water and a reputation for one of Brazil's most relaxed lifestyles.
Paraty — 4 hours by bus. A colonial port town preserved almost entirely from the 17th century, surrounded by jungle and clear bays.
Book it before the fares move. February and March are some of the best months to be in Brazil.
