Mallorca gets written off as a package holiday island. That's a mistake. The hidden coves in the east, the old town in Palma, the Serra de Tramuntana mountains — there's more here than most visitors ever get to see. Ryanair flies there non-stop from four German airports this summer from €38 return. On those terms, it's worth doing properly.

💰 How far does your money go?

A menu del día lunch in Palma — three courses with a drink — costs €12 to €15 at a proper local restaurant. A draft beer on a terrace runs about €3 to €4. Even in peak season, eating and drinking well in Mallorca costs considerably less than a similar afternoon out in Frankfurt or Cologne.

☀️ The weather

July and August in Mallorca means reliable heat: temperatures between 28 and 32°C, clear skies almost every day, and sea temperatures around 25°C. The island is at its busiest in these months, so the most popular coves fill up early. Get there before 10am or expect company.

🏨 Where to stay

Palma and its surrounding area have strong options at every level.

Hotel JS Palma Stay — Adults Only — 8.4/10 · From €75/night
Adults-only hotel 80 metres from Can Pastilla beach, with two pools, a spa, and a sun terrace that doesn't shut down at dusk.

Hotel Gloria de Sant Jaume — 8.7/10 · From €130/night
Elegant boutique hotel in the heart of Palma's old town. Rooftop terrace, excellent breakfast, and ten minutes on foot to La Seu cathedral.

Can Alomar Hotel — 9.1/10 · From €280/night
A converted 18th-century Mallorcan palace in the centre of Palma. Quiet, refined, and genuinely beautiful. The best address in the city.

🎯 What to do

Mallorca rewards people who get off the main beach strip.

La Seu Cathedral — One of the finest Gothic cathedrals in Spain, right on the Palma waterfront. Gaudi contributed to the interior renovations in the early 20th century. Worth the entrance fee.

Calo des Moro and Cala s'Almunia — The two most photogenic coves on the island, tucked away in the southeast corner. The water is a colour you don't expect from the Mediterranean. Arrive early — they fill up fast.

Bellver Castle — A 14th-century circular castle on a pine-covered hill above Palma, with 360-degree views of the city and the bay. One of the only circular medieval castles in Europe, and largely overlooked by tourists.

Playa de Palma promenade — Six kilometres of seafront bars, restaurants, and terrace life stretching east from Palma. The best stretch for a long dinner with a sea view and a cold beer at sunset.

🗺️ Where to go from here

Mallorca is the hub of the Balearic Islands — the others are easily within reach.

Ibiza — Ferry from Palma in around 2.5 hours. The nightlife reputation is well-earned, but the north of the island has quiet coves and villages that most visitors never reach.

Menorca — The quietest and greenest of the main Balearics. Ferry from Palma or a short flight. Some of the best untouched beaches in the western Mediterranean.

Formentera — An hour by ferry from Ibiza. No cars, no resorts, and some of the clearest water in Europe. Worth the detour for a day or two.

At €38 return non-stop, there's no good reason to wait. Ryanair prices like this don't last the week.
