Japan has a way of making every assumption you bring feel small. The streets are quieter than you expect. The food costs less. And the sheer density of things to see, eat and experience never quite lets up. With a single connection, you can fly from Barcelona to Osaka or Tokyo with Shenzhen Airlines for as little as €542 return this November and December.

💰 How far does your money go?
Japan surprises most first-timers. A gyudon, Japan's classic beef and rice bowl, costs around ¥500, which is under €3. A proper bowl of ramen runs about ¥1,000, just over €6. For comparison, a set lunch in Barcelona rarely comes in under €12. Lean on convenience stores and local spots and you can eat very well all day for under €20.
☀️ The weather
November is one of the best months to visit Japan. Temperatures in Osaka and Tokyo sit between 10°C and 18°C, crisp and dry, with the parks and temple gardens turning spectacular shades of red and gold. By December it cools further to around 5–12°C, but the skies stay clear. Both cities put on extraordinary winter illuminations that make the cold feel worth it.

🎯 What to do
Japan does not need to try hard to impress. A few things worth putting on the list.
Dotonbori (Osaka): Osaka's famous food and entertainment strip. Neon signs, street vendors and the kind of energy that makes you forget you were tired from the flight.
Fushimi Inari Taisha (Kyoto, day trip): Thousands of torii gates climbing a forested hillside. Go before 8am to beat the crowds. Free to enter.
Shibuya Crossing (Tokyo): The world's busiest pedestrian scramble. Best viewed from the Starbucks above. Genuinely hard to prepare for.
Autumn foliage: November is peak koyo season across Japan. Osaka Castle Park and Shinjuku Gyoen in Tokyo turn vivid red and gold. Worth timing your trip around.
🗺️ Where to go from here
Both Osaka and Tokyo make excellent starting points for wider exploration.
Kyoto: Ancient temples, bamboo forests and the Arashiyama district. 15 minutes from Osaka by Shinkansen.
Nara: Deer roaming around eighth-century shrines and the world's largest bronze Buddha. 45 minutes from Osaka by train.
Hiroshima and Miyajima: History and one of Japan's most photographed torii gates rising from the sea. 1.5 hours from Osaka.
Hakone: Volcanic terrain, outdoor hot springs and views of Mount Fuji on clear days. Under 2 hours from Tokyo.
Nikko: Ornate mountain shrines set inside dense cedar forests. Under 2 hours from Tokyo.
