💰 How far does your money go?

Singapore has a reputation for being expensive, and for beer and cocktails that reputation holds. But the hawker centres change the maths entirely. A plate of Hainanese chicken rice at Maxwell Food Centre costs around SGD 5 - about €3. A full meal with a kopi (traditional local coffee) rarely tops €5. A menú del día in Barcelona runs €12-15. At a hawker centre, you eat just as well for a third of that.

☀️ Weather in Singapore in August and September

August and September fall in Singapore's wetter season. Temperatures sit at 28-30°C throughout the day, with high humidity. There are around 14-15 days with rainfall each month, but showers are typically heavy and short - most clear within the hour. Evenings are warm and often clear. Pack light clothing and expect the occasional downpour.

🏨 Where to stay

Three solid options across every budget.

ibis Singapore on Bencoolen · 8.2/10 · From €65/night
Central location in Bugis, well-connected to the MRT, and consistently reliable for the price. A good base for exploring the whole city.

Naumi Hotel · 8.4/10 · From €160/night
A boutique hotel in the civic district with a rooftop infinity pool and sweeping skyline views. Well regarded for its service and considered design throughout.

The Fullerton Hotel Singapore · 9.1/10 · From €380/night
A 1928 neoclassical landmark on the Singapore River. One of the most celebrated hotels in Asia, with multiple restaurants, a pool and a level of finish that justifies the rate.

🎯 What to do

A city that packs a lot into a small footprint.

Gardens by the Bay - The Supertrees and the Cloud Forest dome, home to a 35-metre indoor waterfall, are genuinely unlike anything else. Go at dusk for the evening light show.

Maxwell Food Centre - Singapore's most famous hawker centre and the right introduction to how the city eats. Arrive hungry and order the chicken rice.

Marina Bay Sands SkyPark - The observation deck sits 200 metres above the waterfront. Views over the port, the marina and the city at night are as dramatic as they look in photographs.

Kampong Glam and Little India - Two compact neighbourhoods a few minutes apart: a Malay quarter with Sultan Mosque and vivid street art, and a Tamil district of temples, spice shops and some of the best biryani outside South Asia.

🗺️ Where to go from here

Singapore is Southeast Asia's main transit hub. The rest of the region opens up from Changi.

Bali, Indonesia - 2.5 hours by air. Rice terraces, Hindu temples and beaches at Seminyak and Uluwatu. One of the most visited islands in the world, and still worth it.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - 1 hour by air or 4.5 hours by bus. The Petronas Towers, Batu Caves and street food markets that rival Singapore's own.

Penang, Malaysia - 1 hour 20 minutes by air. A UNESCO-listed food capital. Georgetown is arguably the best place to eat in Southeast Asia.

Bintan Island, Indonesia - 1 hour by ferry from Tanah Merah. Beaches, resorts and rainforest with almost none of the crowds of Bali.

Langkawi, Malaysia - 1 hour 30 minutes by air. A duty-free island of jungle mountains, waterfalls and quiet beaches in the Andaman Sea.

€699. Non-stop. Singapore Airlines. If you're going to fly to the other side of the world, this is the way to do it.
