Grand Palace and Wat Pho — Thailand's royal heartland in the heart of the old city. The reclining Buddha at Wat Pho is one of the most striking things in Southeast Asia — the scale of it stops you in your tracks.
Damnoen Saduak floating market — Vendors on wooden boats laden with fruit, noodles and flowers. Get there before 9am before the tour buses arrive and the atmosphere shifts.
Night markets (Chatuchak, Rot Fai) — 15,000 stalls, street food, vintage clothing and live music. Bangkok's night markets are a world of their own — go with no plan and a good appetite.
Thai cooking class — A morning in a local kitchen learning three or four dishes from scratch. Most include a market visit beforehand. The opposite of a tourist trap.

Ayutthaya — Thailand's ancient capital, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ruined temples, riverside restaurants, and one of the best day trips in the country. Two hours by train.
