💰 How far does your money go?
A full meal at a boteco, the local bar-restaurant found on every corner, costs around 30 BRL, roughly €5. That is less than a tostada con tomate at most Madrid terrace bars. A caipirinha comes in at about 15 to 20 BRL (€2.50 to €3.50). For what you'd spend on a menú del día in Madrid, you can eat and drink well for an entire day in Fortaleza.
☀️ The weather
Fortaleza sits just 3 degrees south of the equator. February and March bring temperatures of 28 to 30°C with high humidity. There are short afternoon showers during this period, but they clear quickly and the sun returns. Sea temperature stays above 27°C throughout. Proper tropical heat.

🎯 What to do
Fortaleza is a beach city with a strong food culture and some of the best seafood on the Brazilian coast.
Praia do Futuro - Eight kilometres of Atlantic coast lined with barracas (beach bars) serving cold beer, grilled lobster and fresh coconut water all day.
Dragão do Mar Cultural Centre - Museums, galleries, an amphitheatre and open-air concert spaces in the historic centre. Free to enter most areas, and busy at weekends.
Mercado Central - Four floors of stalls selling hammocks, embroidered lace, cachaça and handmade crafts from Ceará state. The most concentrated place in the city to buy local products.
Buggy ride at sunset along the dunes - Head west from the city at dusk and ride through the coastal dunes as the light turns. One of those experiences specific to this part of Brazil and hard to replicate elsewhere.
🗺️ Where to go from here
Ceará state has some of Brazil's most striking coastline, all within reach of Fortaleza.
Jericoacoara - One of Brazil's most celebrated beach destinations: sand dunes, turquoise lagoons and a famous sunset ritual. Around 4 hours by road, the last stretch by 4x4 across the sand.
Canoa Quebrada - A bohemian beach town built into red sandstone cliffs, 2.5 to 3 hours east. Known for kitesurfing, colourful sunsets and a small strip of bars called Broadway.
Morro Branco - Colourful eroded cliffs of red, yellow and white rising from the beach, 85 km east of Fortaleza. Less visited than Canoa Quebrada and worth the detour.
Cumbuco - A quiet village 30 km west of the city, with sand dunes, kite schools and freshwater lagoons. Easy to reach for a half-day from Fortaleza.
Iberia's non-stop service from Madrid to Fortaleza does not run year-round. These prices are competitive for a transatlantic non-stop. Check the dates and book.
